They'll be dancing in Chicago...

Pike and Broadway, last night. Photos ganked from the Stranger:

Callin' out around the world
Are you ready for a brand new beat?
Summer's here and the time is right
For dancin' in the streets
They're dancin' in Chicago
Down in New Orleans
Up in New York City

All we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
There'll be swingin', swayin' and records playin'
And dancin' in the streets

Oh, it doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as you are there
So come on, every guy grab a girl
Everywhere around the world
There'll be dancin'
They're dancin' in the street

This is an invitation
Across the nation
A chance for the folks to meet
There'll be laughin' and singin' and music swingin'
And dancin' in the streets

Philadelphia, P.A. (Philadelphia, P.A.)
Baltimore and DC now (Baltimore and DC now)
Yeah don't forget the Motor City (can't forget the Motor City)

All we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
There'll be swingin', swayin' and records playin'
And dancin' in the street, yeah

Oh, it doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as you are there
So come on, every guy grasp a girl
Everywhere around the world
There'll be dancin'
They're dancin' in the streets

Philadelphia, P.A. (Philadelphia, P.A.)
Baltimore and DC now (Baltimore and DC now)
Yeah don't forget the Motor City (can't forget the Motor City)
All the way down in L.A. California
Not to mention Halifax Nova Scotia
Manchester
Alexandria, Virginia, Virginia

Funny, how everybody has put their own soundtrack-in-their-head together for this.

"Don't Stop Believing" has of course been quite popular.

But, this is the one that's been running through my head since about mid-day yesterday:

I can see clearly now, the rain is gone,
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.

I think I can make it now, the pain is gone
All of the bad feelings have disappeared
Here is the rainbow I’ve been prayin?for
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.

Look all around, there’s nothin?but blue skies
Look straight ahead, nothin?but blue skies

I can see clearly now, the rain is gone,
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.

Were you there? We wondered where you were.

It was amazing. We could hear the party from The Theatre's fire escape starting around 9pm, and the celebration just kept growing. A drag queen on the roof of Neighbor's led a neighborhood-wide chorus of The Star-Spangled Banner around midnight, and I heard that the (safe! peaceful! joyous!) carousing went on for several more hours. Glorious.

Mol: I was on my end of Capitol Hill drinking at the Roanoke. It was festive and people were honking their horns outside and partying but not like they were down where you were at, by the looks of it.

By the time I got your message Obama was about to speak. Obviously I stayed to watch that. After that I realized that there was no possible way I was gonna drive down to the South Hill. Too much to drink and no place to park once I got there. I kinda wish I'd been in the midst of that, but I was in a bar full of very happy people, people who kept shaking their heads and saying "I don't believe this is happening. President Barack Obama. Holy crap."
