One Day My Prince Will Come

Today a certain local granting organization sent me out to review a performance by the Seattle Girl's Choir. The music was good but an alarming number of "traditional" songs feature lyrics about girls being purchased/bartered/abducted into marriage. Kinda disturbing.

I liked the Shaker songs, though.

Plenty of art about abduction into marriage. For some reason, it’s an incredibly popular topic—mayhem and torn bodices—go figure.

Sabine women sez, if rape is a bad thing, UR doing it wrong.

If you're too lazy to steal one, buying a wife is fine. And if you don’t pay a good price, or at least barter for a few plump chickens, how is anybody going to know she’s worth anything? How will she know that she's pretty? Please don't allow your misogyny to deprive deserving girls of their self-esteem.
